My mother Suzanne, modeled for Milton Avery. "Our French friend Suzanne, the wife of the director of the Paul Rosenberg Gallery, would drop in frequently when she walked her dog. Her piquant features and imaginative headdress intrigued Milton and she became the subject of a number of his paintings." (Thomas Gibson. Milton Avery, Figures From The Forties 1893-1965)

In addition to modeling, Suzanne was responsible for most of the hats worn by Avery's other models. "Our charming friend Suzanne. She had come to sew a dress for me while I worked at my drawing table. Her sharp features and striking headdress set the tone for this symphony of high-keyed contrasting colours and angular rhythms." (Thomas Gibson. Milton Avery, Figures From The Forties 1893-1965)
